FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

WHY WE ADVOCATE FOR THE ARTS

Each of us has our own personal story for why we advocate for the arts and with the potential cuts to the NEA that would have an over $1 million impact on the Erie Region, it is an important time to tell others why we advocate.

This week our Blog features our Concertmaster and various staff members, who once were musicians, writing on how music made a dramatic impact on their lives. Personally, I advocate for the arts for many reasons. Yes, I know that the non-profit arts industry generates $166.2 billion annually in economic activity, the fifth largest industry in the United States, and employs twice as many people as the American auto industry… and I tell politicians this often and loudly.... but I do not advocate because of those who choose to not understand. I advocate because I share a bond with the 5.7 million people who work in the arts and who, I am positive, have devoted their lives to the arts for many of the reasons I have. I work to serve the community, to reach new audiences, to serve the underprivileged, to educate, to help heighten an art form, to bring joy and excitement.

Please, in a time when arts funding is being cut left and right, tell many why you advocate for the arts.

Thank you for advocating,

Audrey Szychulski

Musicians Announced For  “There Are No Goodbyes” Film Soundtrack

In September Lyons Den Productions announced a submission contest for Erie Pennsylvania-area
bands and musicians, both past and present, for the soundtrack of their upcoming feature film “There Are No Goodbyes“. During the three-month submission window over 200 compositions were received from over 50 artists. Using Erie as a backdrop for the story, the filmmakers saw an opportunity to showcase aspects of the city that might get unnoticed or unrecognized. Submissions were accepted from all genres.

Andy Flatley, a longtime Lyons Den Productions collaborator, is producing the soundtrack and scoring the film. Of the contest he said “Erie is a diverse place and as such it has quite a diverse musical world. This is something that was shown to us very clearly through the sheer volume of music we received. It was quite an experience and we are very excited to work with these artists.” We want to congratulate the following musicians who will be joining Lumiere and Phantasm on the soundtrack:

Sossie Govna ( Hip Hop ) Andrew Todd ( Aural Wizardry ) Bill Burke ( Jazz ) Bobby J. ( Instrumental Electronic ) Deadhorse ( Post-rock ) Fly MC ( Hip Hop / Rap ) Mount Peru ( Cosmic Americana ) The Intrepid Explorers Club ( Time-traveling Troubadours ) David Peters ( Singer/ Songwriter ) Phylosophy ( Hip Hop / Rap ) Jargonauts ( Genre Defying Awesomeness ) A.D. Wondersound w/ Kacy Kubeldis ( Chanson Chanteur and Chanteuse )

In the coming months, Lyons Den Productions will be highlighting the artists selected for the soundtrack on the production blog for the film at ThereAreNoGoodbyes.com. The film and soundtrack are expected to debut in 2012.

ABOUT “THERE ARE NO GOODBYES” – “There Are No Goodbyes” is the second feature length film from the award-winning team of talent at Lyons Den Productions. The film is a story about choices and finding purpose in one’s life in the context of the current sociopolitical climate of blue-collar America. Production is expected to wrap this summer with an anticipated premiere in 2012. For more information: www.ThereAreNoGoodbyes.com

Battle: Los Angeles Review

By Roger Ebert

"Battle: Los Angeles" is noisy, violent, ugly and stupid. Its manufacture is a reflection of appalling cynicism on the part of its makers, who don't even try to make it more than senseless chaos. Here's a science-fiction film that's an insult to the words "science" and "fiction," and the hyphen in between them. You want to cut it up to clean under your fingernails.

Meteors fall to Earth near the coasts of the world's major cities (and in Ireland's Dingle Bay — that meteor must have strayed off course). They contain alien troops, which march up from the beach with their weapons of war and attack mankind. No reason is given for this, although it's mentioned they may want our water. We meet the members of a Marine platoon, and its battle-scarred Staff Sgt. Nantz (Aaron Eckhart). They're helicoptered into Santa Monica and apparently defeat the aliens. Since all of Los Angeles is frequently seen in flames, it's not entirely clear how the Santa Monica action is crucial, but apparently it is.

The aliens are hilarious. Do they give Razzies for special effects? They seem to be animal/machine hybrids with automatic weapons growing from their arms, which must make it hard to change the baby. As the Marines use their combat knives to carve into the aliens, they find one layer after another of icky gelatinous pus-filled goo. Luckily, the other aliens are mostly seen in long shot, where they look like stick figures whipped up by apprentice animators.

Aaron Eckhart stars as Staff Sgt. Nantz, a 20-year veteran who has something shady in his record, which people keep referring to, although screenwriter Christopher Bertolini is too cagey to come right out and describe it. Never mind. Eckhart is perfectly cast, and let the word go forth that he makes one hell of a great-looking action hero. He is also a fine actor, but acting skills are not required from anyone in this movie.

The dialogue consists almost entirely of terse screams: Watch it! Incoming! Move! Look out! Fire! Move! The only characters I remember having four sentences in a row are the anchors on cable news. Although the platoon includes the usual buffet of ethnicities, including Latinos, Asians and a Nigerian surgeon, none of them get much more than a word or two in a row, so as characters, they're all placeholders.

You gotta see the alien battleships in this movie. They seem to have been assembled by the proverbial tornado blowing through a junkyard. They're aggressively ugly and cluttered, the product of a planet where design has not been discovered and even the Coke bottles must look like pincushions. Although these ships presumably arrived inside the meteors, one in particular exhibits uncanny versatility, by rising up from the Earth before the very eyes of the startled Marines. How, you may ask, did it tunnel for 10 or 12 blocks under Santa Monica to the battle lines at Lincoln Boulevard?

There is a lazy editing style in action movies these days that assumes nothing need make any sense visually. In a good movie, we understand where the heroes are, and where their opponents are, and why, and when they fire on each other, we understand the geometry. In a mess like this, the frame is filled with flashes and explosions and shots so brief that nothing makes sense. From time to time, there'll be a closeup of Aaron Eckhart screaming something, for example, and on either side of that shot, there will be unrelated shots of incomprehensible action.

When I think of the elegant construction of something like "Gunfight at the OK Corral," I want to rend the hair from my head and weep bitter tears of despair. Generations of filmmakers devoted their lives to perfecting techniques that a director like Jonathan Liebesman is either ignorant of, or indifferent to. Yet he is given millions of dollars to produce this assault on the attention span of a generation.

Young men: If you attend this crap with friends who admire it, tactfully inform them they are idiots. Young women: If your date likes this movie, tell him you've been thinking it over, and you think you should consider spending some time apart.

Sonnet Mondal Becomes the First Indian to Bag the AZsacra International Poetry Award
By Baral Sen

The Taj Mahal Review Editors declared Sonnet Mondal one of the three winners of the AZsacra International Poetry award sponsored from Russia and given out to three best contributing poets from all over the world by The Taj Mahal Review Journal. Sonnet has become the first and youngest poet to win this award. In their declaration letter the panel of editors mentioned the name of the poem as "Seduced in the Sunderbans" based on which he was being chosen for the award in the first category even before announcing the names of the other following up winners. In the past two years this award has been bagged by eminent poet, critic and peace envoy Maria Cristine Azcona from Argentina, international award winning poet and poetry judge Albert Russo from France, famous writer and photographer Adam Donaldson Powell from Norway, Ban'ya Natsuishi from Japan and Salvattore Amico M Buttaci from U.S.A. Sesame Street Live:
Elmo's Green Thumb
Running: 4/1/2011 - 4/3/2011 @ Warner Theatre
Tickets Available Now Buy Online Now
Elmo has raised his sunflower, Sunny, from a seed, but the floral friend has outgrown his flower pot. Elmo and friends find Big Birds garden the ideal place for Sunny to flourish and grow but they are too excited to wait. Rather than let Sunny follow natures course, Abby Cadabby, Sesame Streets fairy-in-training, casts a spell to make him grow. The spell does just the opposite and, instead of growing, Elmo and all of his friends shrink! While Abby searches for just the right words to reverse the spell, Elmo, Zoe, Telly and friends explore Big Birds garden from a smaller perspective and learn some big lessons about patience, overcoming their fears and appreciating the role that each creature plays in our ecosystem from dancing ladybugs and beautiful butterflies to grouchy beetles that scavenge the garden floor. Its a fresh, original Sesame Street Live show on a whole new scale!

THE COLOR PURPLE

THE COLOR PURPLE is a soul-stirring musical based on the classic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker and the moving film by Steven Spielberg. Nominated for eleven Tony Awards, THE COLOR PURPLE is a landmark theatrical event, a celebration of love, and a Broadway phenomenon. With a joyous GRAMMY-nominated score featuring jazz, gospel and blues, THE COLOR PURPLE is capturing the hearts of young and old, and uniting audiences in a community of joy. A ROOF-RAISING STORY OF TRIUMPH! --Michael Kuchwara, AP

LEGALLY BLONDE
Showing: Wed 5/4/2011 @ Warner Theatre
Tickets Available Now Buy Online Now
It's here, and it's "AN ELLE OF A SHOW" (TIME Magazine). The hilarious MGM film is Broadway's new smash hit musical, and now LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL is coming to you. Legally Blonde follows sorority star Elle Woods, an underestimated blonde who doesn't take "no" for an answer. When her boyfriend dumps her for someone more "serious," Elle puts down the credit card, hits the books, and sets out to go where no Delta Nu has gone before: Harvard Law. Along the way, Elle proves that being true to yourself never goes out of style. After turning Broadway and MTV hot pink, this Feel-Good Song and Dance Juggernaut (New York Magazine) is The Best New Musical Around! (WOR)
