Tim Samaras,” on
Tuesday, Jan.
10.
Samaras is the
lead
investigator for
Team TWISTEX on
Discovery
Channel’s
extreme-weather
reality show
“Storm Chasers.”
His presentation
will be held at
7 p.m. in the
McGarvey Commons
of the college’s
Reed Union
Building.
Admission is
free and open to
the public.
To conduct his
research,
Samaras drives
straight toward
the tornados
that others
scramble to
escape. He
attempts to
predict the
exact
coordinates of
an unborn
tornado, arrive
before it
materializes,
and place a
weather-measurement
probe of his own
design directly
in the twister’s
path. In June
2003, the probe
Samaras put in
an F4 tornado
measured an
astounding 100
millibar
pressure drop, a
record that
stands to this
day.
“Storm chasers
help
meteorologists
visualize the
dynamics behind
nature’s most
violent storms,”
says Jason
Berry, a
lecturer in
meteorology at
Penn State
Behrend and
meteorologist on
JET 24, FOX 66
and YourErie.com.
“Currently,
tornado warnings
average a mere
13 minutes.
Tim’s data
provides a piece
of the puzzle
for creating
more precise
forecasts,
giving people
earlier warning
when severe
weather
strikes.”
