Edinboro University, Wqln Team Up To Examine Humor On Television

Edinboro University and WQLN Public Media are collaborating to take a look at humor on television.

The event, which will be held on April 10 at 7 p.m. in Room 107A of Compton Hall on the Edinboro University campus, will feature an advance screening of “Standup to Sitcom,” the opening episode of the new season of the PBS series “Pioneers in Television,” followed by a panel of media experts reflecting on the program and engaging in a dialogue about television and humor. The panel includes WQLN President Tom New, EU Communication and Media Studies Department faculty member Terry Warburton, and Cyndy Patton, media specialist at Saint Vincent Hospital and former newscaster with WJET-TV.

The event is free and open to the public.

“Our department is happy to be working with WQLN  in giving our campus and community the opportunity to have an advance look at another exciting PBS program,” said Dr. Tony Peyronel, chairperson of the Department of Communication and Media Studies at Edinboro. “This is our third such collaboration of the year, and it may prove to be the most entertaining of all.”

The department previously has hosted screenings of “League of Denial: The NFL’s Concussion Crisis” and “Hawking.”

“Pioneers of Television’ is now in its fourth season and features stories of the visionaries who helped shape the medium of television with their creativity, foresight and wisdom. In this season’s debut episode, Jerry Seinfeld, Roseanne Barr, Ray Romano and others discuss how standup comics transitioned to sitcoms. The new season of “Pioneers of Television” premieres on WQLN-TV on April 15.
