Erie Land Lighthouse Tours Announced
by the Erie Playhouse and the Port Authority
The Erie Playhouse, in cooperation with the Erie Port Authority, will, once again, conduct tours of the historic Erie Land Lighthouse, located at the foot of Lighthouse St. in James N. Thompson Lighthouse Park. The tours are scheduled on select dates in August.
The lighthouse, also referred to as the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse, was constructed in 1818 and was the first built on the Great Lakes. Local lighthouse enthusiasts and ardent Erie Playhouse supporters Kitty Felion and Janet Woods spearheaded a restoration project in cooperation with the Erie Port Authority and Ray Schreckengost, which was completed in 2004.
This is the third year the Erie Playhouse has conducted tours. Groups of 12 will be taken up the 59 steps to the top to view the scenic Erie harbor and surrounding area. Those waiting will pass the time enjoying historic renderings and photographs of the lighthouse. There is also a playground for the children to enjoy.
In conjunction with Tall Ships Erie, the lighthouse will be open for tours on Sept 5 from 3-7pm, providing a spectacular viewing location as the nine ships sail into the port of Erie. Tall Ships Erie 2013 presented by Highmark and Perry 200, will take place September 5th through 8th, 2013. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the building of Commodore Perry’s fleet in Erie, Pa and his victory at the Battle of Lake Erie off Put-in-Bay, Ohio on September 10th.
