Juried Student Show Opens Jan. 28 At Mercyhurst’s Cummings Gallery
Students from Mercyhurst University will showcase their best work at the university’s annual Juried Student Art Show, opening Jan. 28 in the Cummings Art Gallery. The show kicks off with a gallery opening celebration from 7 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 31, and the exhibit concludes on March 17.
Students have the opportunity to drop off up to three works they created during their most recent two years of study at Mercyhurst from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 22 and 23. Previous shows have exhibited upward of 50 student entries in all 2-D and 3-D media, from oils and watercolors to ceramics and sculpture. Multimedia works will also be accepted.
This year’s juror, artist Ann Magenau, will judge the entries and distribute awards on Jan. 24. Magenau, an Erie native, began her studies under Joseph Plavcan in Erie and at the Cleveland Institute of Art before completing her BFA at the Kansas City Art Institute. She earned her MFA from SUNY Buffalo. Over the course of her career, her work has evolved from expressionism to realism.
Magenau has had one-woman shows at the Artist’s Committee Gallery and the More-Rubin Gallery in Buffalo, N.Y., and at the Erie Art Center. Her works have also been exhibited in numerous juried and invitational exhibitions, including the Erie Art Museum’s Annual Spring Show, the Marietta National and the Western New York Exhibition of the Albright Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo. She works in her studio in her home in Fairview, Pa.
Cummings Gallery is located in the lobby of the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center. The show will be open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and weekends from 2 to 5 p.m. The gallery will be closed during the university’s spring term break from Feb. 21-March 3. For more information, call 814-824-2092.
