Mercyhurst Slates MLK Events

Mercyhurst University has several events planned for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 21 to celebrate the life and legacy of the civil rights leader.

Members of the ‘Hurst community will unite behind the Mercyhurst University banner when they join other Erie organizations in the city’s annual Memorial March. The march begins at 10 a.m. at Perry Square and will conclude around 11 a.m. at the MLK Center, 312 Chestnut St.

Current students, faculty, staff and alumni are encouraged to attend. Individuals who are driving can meet at the Perry Square gazebo, and transportation will be provided from campus for current students.

Students can board the university van at 9:15 a.m. behind the Carolyn Herrmann Student Union and catch a ride back to campus at the MLK Center at the conclusion of the march.

The university will host a memorial brunch and viewing of “Martin Luther King Jr.: A Man of Peace” at 11 a.m. in the Student Union Great Room. The documentary outlines the work King did in attempting to bring peace during the unrest of the Vietnam War and the civil rights movement. Following the documentary, the audience is encouraged to stay to watch coverage of President Barack Obama’s inauguration into his second term in office.

The day’s events are sponsored by a diversity enrichment grant and a student union partnership with the Service Learning Office, Campus Ministry, Marion Shane Multicultural Center and the Campus Involvement Center.
