Playhouse to Attend Theatre Competition with The Glorious Ones

The Playhouse is entering the same theatre competition that earned them the honor of being one of the ten best community theatres in the nation back in the late ’80s with The Glorious Ones. Don’t miss this rousing and sentimental musical before they take it to the state competition in Williamsport, PA March 17-19.

The Glorious Ones, based on the novel by noted author, Francine Prose, was hailed by The New York Times as “a valentine to the actor’s life – joyfully naughty, with buoyant music by Stephen Flaherty and a bawdy book by Lynn Ahrens.”

Both slapstick and serious, the musical tells how an Italian theatre troupe came to be and how it captured the public’s adoration with its ribald comedy… before changing artistic fashion altered its way of life. It follows six archetypal characters – the charismatic leading man, the sly harlequin, the old miser, the voluptuous leading lady, the devoted dwarf and the elegant Moon Woman – as they search for glory and fame, love and immortality.

The Glorious Ones is under the direction/staging of Almitra Clerkin with Commedia dell’arte direction by Alaina Manchester and musical direction by Michael Malthaner. The show features the talents of Kate Amatuzzo, Shawn Clerkin, Jean Malthaner, Bob Martin, Kelly Rodland and Patrick Thiem.

All performances are at Gannon University’s Schuster Theatre. Tickets are $25 and include the show and reception prior to the show. All proceeds benefit the Alex Clemente Fund for Performing and Related Arts and the Playhouse’s participation in the PACTFest 2017 Theatre Competition, which is being held in Williamsport, PA March 17-19.
