Promise at Dawn dramatizes the epic life of renowned French writer and war hero Romain Gary and his eccentric, adoring, and impossibly demanding mother Nina (Charlotte Gainsbourg in a stunning performance). While his mother’s frequent declarations of his future fame embarrass and paralyze him at times, her passion and high expectations push him to become one of France’s greatest 20th-century novelists and to live his life filled with passion, adventure, and mystery. The film’s luminous cinematography and detailed production design complement the story’s complex emotional truths of a mother’s self-sacrifice and impossible dreams for her child.
