Voices Against Brain Cancer to Host Annual “Join the Voices! Run/Walk” in Partnership with New York Road Runners

Tony Danza Appointed as Master of Ceremonies for the Charitable Event

Voices Against Brain Cancer, an organization dedicated to brain cancer research and advocacy, in partnership with New York Road Runners, will host its annual “Join the Voices! Run/Walk” on Sunday, November 17, 2013 in Central Park, New York at 8:30 a.m. The charitable event will feature a five-mile run, a scenic health walk, kids races and a fun family festival. Television, stage, and screen icon Tony Danza will act as the official Master of Ceremonies for the third year in a row.

Participants of the “Join the Voices! Run/Walk” are encouraged to help raise funds for Voices Against Brain Cancer and promote the organization’s mission to find a cure for brain cancer and brain tumors by advancing scientific research, increasing awareness within the medical community and supporting patients, their families and caregivers afflicted with this devastating disease.

This year’s honorees have been chosen for their continued efforts to help spread brain cancer and brain tumor awareness. The recipient of the Gary Lichtenstein Humanitarian Award is Doctor Howard A. Fine, of NYU Langone Medical Center, who is largely involved in the development of new advances in brain tumor and brain cancer research. A recipient of the Youth Ambassador Award is Jessina Noel, daughter of John Noel, the beloved WNBC journalist who passed away from brain cancer earlier this year. Among the Courage Awards recipients will be David Menasche, author of book “The Priority List,” an autobiographical account of his journey through the United States visiting former students after a diagnosis of terminal brain cancer, on sale January 2014. Iram Leon, a brain cancer patient who is celebrated for running races while pushing his 6-year-old daughter in a stroller, will participate (with daughter, Kiana) in the race and also receive a Courage Award.

Additional award recipients include:

    •     Courage Award: Bob Gerboth, Ted Hirsch, Howard Kaden, Stu Kantor, Iram Leon, David Menasche
    •     Compassionate Care Award: Heather Kramer Giordano, ANP; Thomas Goodsell, RN, CCRN, SCRN
    •    Youth Ambassador Award: Jessina Noel, Robert Valinoti

The annual “Join the Voices! Run/Walk” event pays tribute to Fred Lebow, the founder of the ING New York City Marathon who passed away from brain cancer in 1994, by giving a grant in his honor.

VABC has a wide variety of initiatives in place for brain cancer research, awareness and support. The organization’s research grants fund cutting-edge research programs that will have a monumental impact on the diagnosis and treatment of brain cancer. VABC currently funds research at several esteemed institutions such as Brookhaven National Laboratory, Cleveland Clinic, Columbia, Cornell, Duke, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Memorial Sloan-Kettering and Yale, to name a few.

VABC’s mission is to find a cure for brain cancer by advancing scientific research, increasing awareness within the medical community and supporting patients, their families and caregivers afflicted with this devastating disease.
