“Beyond Coal in Pennsylvania”

Sierra Club chapter president speaking on April 3

The Sierra Club will bring its Beyond Coal grassroots campaign to the Erie region when Jeff Schmidt, executive director of the club’s state chapter, discusses “Beyond Coal in Pennsylvania” at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, on Wednesday, April 3.

Schmidt’s talk takes place at 7:30 p.m. in 180 Jack Burke Research and Economic Development Center, 5101 Jordan Road. Admission is free and parking will be available in the deck south of Burke, off Technology Drive.

Beyond Coal’s objective is replacing technology that burns coal and other fossil fuels with renewable resources such as wind, solar and geothermal energy.  The campaign mobilizes local activists to advocate for the retirement of outdated coal-fired power plants and prevention of the construction of new ones.

The “Beyond Coal Pennsylvania” event is sponsored by Penn State Behrend’s B.F.A. in creative writing degree program and by the student History Club and Political Science Society. For additional information, contact John Rossi, associate professor of history, at jpr2@psu.edu.
