Next to Normal – Acclaimed Groundbreaking Musical at the Erie Playhouse
Next to Normal – the winner of the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama – kicks off the summer season at the Erie Playhouse June 7-23.
Next to Normal is an emotional powerhouse of a musical about a family trying to take care of themselves and each other. With music by Tom Kitt and book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey, Next to Normal shines as a prime example of the power of rock to tell heart rending stories.
Assessing the fragmenting effects of mental illness within a family, the musical’s primary focus is on the mother, Diana (Trisha Yates), a manic-depressive who loves and damages those close to her – namely her family – her husband, Dan (Ken Brundage), and her teenage son and daughter, Gabe (Jules Royce) and Natalie (Eva Espy). Rounding out the cast are Natalie’s devoted boyfriend, Henry (Andrew Dolan) and Mike Watts who portrays two of Diana’s ultimately clueless doctors.
This musical bravely ventures beyond the realm of the typical genres and stories while still maintaining the energy and dimensions of a Broadway musical that leaves audiences walking out of the theatre singing the lyrics and analyzing the story.
Next to Normal is under the direction of Richard Davis, with Andrew Rainbow handling musical/vocal direction. Davis also handles costume design and Joe Hassler scenic and lighting design.
Next to Normal is anything but normal – it is innovative, real and an emotionally honest rock musical that will touch your heart.
