Experience The Diversity Of Music From Georgia
Local Talent to be Showcased in “Georgia On My Mind” Performance
The Academy Theatre presents Georgia On My Mind on May 31 and June 1 at 7:30pm, and June 2 at 2:00pm, at 275 Chestnut Street in Meadville. Tickets are $10.50 and $8.50 and are available at www.theacademytheatre.org or by calling 814-337-8000.
The inspiration for this concert comes from the artists who are members of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame. Open from 1996 to 2011, the Georgia Music Hall of Fame celebrated inductees of the Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards. The Awards, started in 1978 and still active, work to nurture the music industry in Georgia, as well as fund scholarships for musicians, singers and songwriters in Georgia.
Many of your favorite local stars will be performing with live musical accompaniment. Director Tom Hall calls the group of 10 to 12 musicians making up the band “probably the most impressive group of musicians in the area.”
One might think with a name like Georgia On My Mind, the musical selections would be country and jazz. While those genres are included, musicians from Georgia are as diverse as our nation itself. There will be the old time fiddle tunes of Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers, soul music, blues, alternative and rock. Artists represented include Ray Charles, James Brown, Otis Redding, Johnny Mercer, Lena Horne, Alan Jackson, Trisha Yearwood, Ma Rainey, REM, B-52s, Little Richard, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers.
A tradition with Academy Theatre concerts, the stage will be set as a cabaret. For audience members who wish to sit on stage, there will be tables and chairs set up, and snacks and soft drinks will be served. This is a great opportunity to see the show intimately, as well as sing and dance to your favorite tunes.
