Erie Community Set To Shimmy For a Cause
By Melanie Augenstein of Starlite Events by Design
Members of the Erie community are gearing up to take part in a popular worldwide event . . . International Shimmy Mob 2013. Regional performer, Carla Fleming, a belly dance enthusiast, was thrilled when approached to organize a local-level event right here in Erie. The shimmy mob, which will take place in conjunction with Worldwide Belly Dance Day on May 11th, is sure to shake up lots of fun . . . but, even more importantly, will serve as a beneficial fundraiser for SafeNet – Erie.
World Belly Dance Day, which unites dancers around the world to celebrate belly dance as a cultural art form, serves as a perfect time to hold the shimmy mob as it can raise awareness to this art, while providing an exciting social, family event that will benefit the community. Approximately 150 cities worldwide are registered to take part in this collaborative flashmob-style phenomenon. The local shimmy mob event will be followed by an after-show featuring dancers, belly dancers, musicians, and theatrical performances from around the region.
Carla’s initiative is to raise record funds for this year’s cause, SafeNet- Erie, a local non-profit organization whose mission is aimed at preventing domestic violence. A variety of raffles, auctions, and other fundraising events will be held to benefit this cause. Funds raised will be used to support a wide-range of residential and non-residential programs to help end the cycle of abuse and help victims regain their sense of dignity.
Anyone interested in taking part in the event itself or even helping out with the fundraising effort is encouraged to do so by contacting Carla. She emphasizes the fact that this is more than just a dance event. Anyone can participate . . . dancers, non-dancers, kids and adults! EVERYONE can do it!! You can practice the choreography at home or at one of the FREE live rehearsal that will be held close to the event date. Registered participants will also receive a t-shirt. Be part of a international tradition, and help your community in a BIG WAY!!
