Howard Fishman Brings Basement Tapes Project to Mercyhurst Stage

The Mercyhurst Institute for Arts & Culture presents Howard Fishman’s “The Basement Tapes Project,” Thursday, Oct. 3, at 8 p.m. in Taylor Little Theatre. The Basement Tapes Project explores the mysterious underground recordings made by Bob Dylan and The Band in 1967 and has been presented to wide acclaim at major national venues.

Performing both well-known songs from the 1975 album Basement Tapes as well as songs that have never been officially made public, The Basement Tapes Project presents a special insight into Dylan’s musical relationship with The Band, using songs as suggestions into the life of one of America’s most influential artists.

Ever-evolving and increasingly difficult to pin down, Howard Fishman filters a deep passion for New Orleans soul, gritty pop, fervent gospel, open-hearted country and experimental jazz through a completely original aesthetic to create a sound entirely his own.

How much do you know about Bob Dylan? Test your knowledge and win prizes as MIAC joins up with community partner Glass Growers Gallery to host a trivia game. The fun begins with a 6:30 p.m. pre-show event in Mercy Heritage Room of Sullivan Hall on the Erie campus. Sample food and enjoy beer from the official brewery of MIAC, Lavery Brewing Company. Expect to sing along, as local musicians Linda Wingerter, Bob Martin and Steve Sears perform tunes by Joni Mitchell.

Fishman began his musical career on the streets of New Orleans and in the subways of New York before landing his first major engagement at the Algonquin Oak Room in 1999. Since then, he has headlined in some of the most prestigious venues in the US and abroad, including: Lincoln Center, The Steppenwolf Theatre, The Blue Note, The Pasadena Playhouse, Joe’s Pub, The Great American Music Hall and Le Petit Journal in Paris. A testament to his wide-ranging appeal, Fishman has appeared on bills with such diverse artists as: Odetta, Yo Yo Ma, Maceo Parker, Califone, Robyn Hitchcock, Madeleine Peyroux, Allen Holdsworth and Nellie McKay. The New York Times has written that his music “transcends time and idiom.”

Expect the good ol’ days, and don’t miss Howard Fishman at Taylor Little Theatre, Thursday, Oct. 3 at 8 p.m.
