MIAC Celebrates 200th Anniversary of ‘Pride & Prejudice’ On PAC Stage

One of the most acclaimed pieces of English literature comes alive when the L.A. Theatre Works presents Jane Austen’s “Pride & Prejudice” at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the Mary D’Angelo Performing Arts Center (PAC) at Mercyhurst University.

Cristina Calvit’s stunning adaptation of the classic romantic comedy, which marks its 200th anniversary this year, is presented by the Mercyhurst Institute for Arts & Culture.

Christina Rieger, Ph.D., associate professor of English, will host a pre-show presentation on Jane Austen and “Pride & Prejudice” at 6:30 p.m. in the university’s Cummings Art Gallery.

The strikingly modern work, first published in 1813, continues to capture the hearts of audiences worldwide. “Pride & Prejudice” is the sparkling tale of the Bennets, a family blessed with five daughters and a mother desperate to marry them off. The tempestuous pairing of the witty, independent Elizabeth and the arrogant but honorable suitor Mr. Darcy sets the standard for all great couples of the stage and screen.

Los Angeles-based L.A. Theatre Works has been heralded as “original, exciting and highly theatrical” by American Theatre Magazine for its unique hybrid of audio theater and innovative use of technology in its performances. Intricate sound designs and on-stage effects transform classic stage works into intimate, compelling and sound-rich audio plays.

The exceptional touring company features two Broadway actors: Jane Carr, a member of Britain’s Royal Shakespeare Company whose television appearances include “Curb Your Enthusiasm” and “Monk”; and Nicholas Hormann, who has appeared in more than 100 plays and made more than 60 guest appearances on television series including “Seinfeld” and “Parks and Recreation.”

Don’t miss this timeless romantic tale brought to life by world-class actors on the Mercyhurst stage.

Tickets are $35 for Gold Circle, $30 for adults and $27 for seniors and students. Tickets can be purchased by calling 814-824-3000 or by visiting miac.mercyhurst.edu.
