Penn State Behrend Jazz Ensemble to Perform Dec. 5

‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ highlights concert’s selections

Brass instruments and the song writing of Freddie Mercury: Who knew the two were so compatible?

The Behrend Jazz Ensemble’s latest concert, titled “Thunderbolts and Lightning,” will be performed Thursday, Dec. 5, at 7:30 p.m. in Reed Auditorium at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.

The concert is highlighted by a jazz setting of the 1975 Queen mega-hit “Bohemian Rhapsody.” The song was written by Queen frontman Freddie Mercury and was later inducted into the Recording Academy’s Grammy Hall of Fame in 2004.

The concert also includes a variety of jazz standards and styles. Senior lecturer in music Gary Viebranz conducts the Behrend Jazz Ensemble, which is comprised of saxophones, trumpets, trombones and a rhythm section consisting of piano, guitar, bass, drums and auxiliary percussion.

Admission to “Thunderbolts and Lightning” is free and open to the public. For additional information, please contact Viebranz at 814-898-6289 or email gav3@psu.edu.
